![]() ![]() Less a sprint than a marathon, The Riftbreaker’s challenge is both sustained and intense. Why don’t we mix these three ideas into one? The RTS strategy, the management of the resources of the survival simulation and the tense action make it a unique experience. Of course, you’d be mixing careful basic planning with swarms of high-speed monsters. ![]() But the result seems both natural and necessary. I didn’t know what I wanted from The Riftbreaker. Beyond that, the game gets complicated at a more or less predictable pace. Like I said, not all the time! There was a loose scatter of rough spots, just enough to make me lose my rhythm for a minute. Every now and then something like enemy density or resource cost will increase dramatically. The difficulty isn’t overwhelming, but the challenge level increases at an odd rate. Here until the job is doneĮvents follow each other in The Riftbreaker however you like, with a few exceptions. Things only slow down when you’re tripped by the sometimes jerky pace. You have to take the time to really appreciate these visuals, a feat made difficult by the frantic gameplay loop. A wild and vibrant color palette doesn’t hurt either. ![]() All you need is superior lighting, textures and particle effects. Turns out, even a tense prospect like this can be breathtaking. Or at least that’s what I thought before. Top-down games like The Riftbreaker have an upper limit on their aesthetic appeal. Fortunately, this world you’re stuck in is quite beautiful as well. You think of every move on a much larger scale when success takes persistence and planning. The mission continues as long as your spawn point exists. There is no funneling all of your resources into one big battle, no risky bet that could win it all. This unique design decision changes the flow of the entire game. The game is only over if the main HQ building is destroyed. You just reappeared with some deleted items, ready to try again. If a wave of enemies surges in and assassinates you, it’s not the end yet. To this end, the mission is not completed until this happens, so you need to persist while waiting. Even the two main game modes simply adjust certain parameters in this simple goal. You are here to open this rift and survive long enough to do so. ![]() Unlike the average RTS game, things aren’t broken down into separate missions or objectives. It is in this lethal equation that the influences of survival come to the surface. #THE RIFTBREAKER PS5 REVIEW HOW TO#How much are you spreading? What do you build first? How to control the battlefield? You have a ton of options and very little time to choose. There is an abundance of raw material scattered around, but you have to be smart about its extraction and distribution. Here’s where this RTS brain comes in handy. You have time to power up, but not a ton. The only concession is that they wait a bit before they really storm the gates, so to speak. But the good guys are running out of ammo, and your opponents far outnumber you. Of course, you have a small but important cache of deadly weapons on hand. At least at the beginning you are way over your head. The fight is frenzied and a bit mismatched. It wouldn’t be a proper survival simulation, otherwise. If that sounds difficult, it absolutely is! But that’s the whole point. You need keen reflexes for these alien hordes, but also an airtight strategy for a balanced and sustainable outpost. You have to push your brain in three very different directions from the jump. You must gather resources, build your outpost, and keep your defenses in order. Assuming you don’t get murdered first, as this new world isn’t very friendly. With a single AI-powered robot, you’ll build the rift that unites two disparate worlds. Your role in this story is the pre-landing team. Whether you like this heady mix of genre spices is another matter. Of course you can add RTS elements, why the hell wouldn’t you? I’ve never played a game like this in my life, and it’s weird that not. Of course, you can mix survival sims and double-barreled shooters. The Riftbreaker feels more organic, more responsive. Disparate sections that kind of cling together, fresh, raw connective tissue. Most of the time, the results are a sum of their parts. Developers have been taking bold risks with genre mixes for years now. ![]()
